Lakebrief is a sailing-conditions dashboard for inland lakes and reservoirs. It's designed to work without you signing in or handing over personal information. This page explains what limited data is involved when you use the site, the cookies set by us and by third parties, and the choices you have.
What we collect
- No account, no personal data required. You can browse every lake, forecast, and water-level page without creating an account or providing your name, email, or location.
- Preferences stored on your device. Choices like your home lake, preferred wind model, and light/dark theme are saved in your browser's local storage. They stay on your device and are not transmitted to us.
- Aggregate analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand which lakes and pages are used, in aggregate, so we can prioritize what to build. This relies on cookies and collects standard technical data such as approximate region, device type, and pages viewed.
Cookies & advertising
Lakebrief is supported in part by advertising. We use Google AdSense to serve ads on some pages. In connection with this:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to Lakebrief and other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
- Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies through their settings. Blocking cookies won't stop you from using Lakebrief, but some ads may become less relevant.
Third-party data sources
To show live conditions, your browser requests data from public sources such as Open-Meteo (weather), the USGS and operating agencies (water level), and the National Weather Service (alerts). These requests are made to display conditions for the lake you're viewing and do not carry personal information about you. Each provider operates under its own privacy policy.
Children
Lakebrief is a general-audience site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site evolves — for example, if we add or change advertising or analytics providers. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "last updated" date.
